What seems common and regrettable for the mass of people may seem shocking and extraordinarily outrageous when it happens to celebrities. Add to that a celebrity who is an enigmatic cult hero, and the story can become almost bigger than life. That is indicative of the divorce filed by Amber Heard against Johnny Depp, her husband of a mere 15 months. It's not an Ohio action but it is instructive due to the application of similar legal principles in this state.
The news of the divorce was intense enough to garner wide press coverage, but the sight of Amber Heard appearing in court with a bruised area around her right eye was, to say the least, a real eye-opener. Several things happened on May 23 when Heard first filed her divorce complaint. For one thing, a criminal investigation was also initiated, but police indicated finding no evidence of a criminal violation.
She asked for spousal support from one of Hollywood's highest paid actors, and for a restraining order to protect herself from Depp's alleged violent tendencies. She alleged irreconcilable differences as the grounds for divorce. Some reports have it that Heard accused Depp of throwing a cell phone in her face.
The family law judge granted a temporary restraining order until the facts could be aired out at a future hearing. An injunction keeping Depp away from Heard's dog was denied. The request for spousal support was denied. Given that Heard has her own lucrative sources of income and based on the shortness of the marriage, the court rejected the request for spousal support.
Heard claimed that Depp is violent, paranoid and has a hot temper and a short fuse. Depp, through his spokesman, denied all allegations of domestic violence. Incredibly, the couple does not have a prenuptial agreement, a surprising failure to protect Depp's wealth estimated at about $400 million. However, with a short marriage, Depp's fortune is likely well insulated from domestic claims. It is reasonable to expect that the same divorce law principles would apply here in Ohio.
